The Price of Recreation: Are Albertans Paying More for Leisure Activities?

Introduction

Recreation is essential for individual and community well-being. Leisure activities offer physical and mental health benefits, encourage social connections, and improve the quality of life. However, the cost of these activities can be a barrier, especially in Alberta, where the cost of living is high. This report analyzes the cost of recreational activities in Alberta, focusing on skiing, golfing, attending sporting events, and utilizing recreation centers, and discusses how these costs impact Albertans' quality of life. It is important to note that prices for recreational activities can vary based on the day of the week, the time of year, and any available promotions. Weekends and holidays typically have higher prices, while weekdays often offer lower rates. Additionally, many venues and organizations provide discounts for various reasons, such as advanced bookings, online purchases, or special offers for specific groups like students or seniors.

Cost of Skiing in Alberta

Skiing is a popular winter activity in Alberta, with many ski resorts nestled in the Canadian Rockies. Lift ticket prices vary depending on the resort, time of year, and skier's age. To assess the cost of skiing in Alberta, we examined lift ticket prices at five major ski resorts:

Ski Resort

Adult (18-64)

Youth (13-17)

Child (6-12)

Senior (65+)

Lake Louise Ski Resort

$149 to $169

$115 to $130

$57 to $64

$99

Marmot Basin Ski Resort

$149

$120

$52

$120

Nakiska Ski Resort

$149

$112

$60

$119

These prices are for full-day lift tickets during the regular season. Notably, many resorts offer half-day and afternoon tickets at significantly lower prices 1.

Cost of Golfing in Alberta

Golfing is another favored recreational activity in Alberta, with various golf courses throughout the province. Green fees vary based on the course, time of year, and golfer's age. We examined green fees at several golf courses across Alberta. Unfortunately, green fee information for many top courses was unavailable 7.

However, we gathered information on green fees for the following courses:

Golf Course

Green Fees

Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course

$269 to $329

Silvertip Resort

$160 to $200

Calgary Golf & Country Club

$27.25 to $58.75

Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club

$110 to $265

Kananaskis Country Golf Course

$109 to $184

Coal Creek Golf Resort

$49 to $89

Northern Bear Golf Club

$55 to $114

These prices are for 18 holes of golf. It is worth noting that many top-rated golf courses in and around Calgary are private, which may limit access for the average Albertan 9.

When comparing the cost of golfing in Alberta to British Columbia, we find a range of green fees. In British Columbia, Olympic View Golf Course has green fees from $69 to $110, while Big Sky Golf Course has rates from $95 to $185 17. This suggests that golfing costs in Alberta may be slightly higher than in some areas of British Columbia, but further research is needed for a comprehensive comparison.

Cost of Attending Sporting Events in Alberta

Alberta has numerous professional and amateur sports teams, offering many opportunities to attend live sporting events 19. Ticket prices vary depending on the sport, team, seat location, and opponent. The most popular youth sports in Alberta include soccer, swimming, and hockey 20. We investigated ticket prices for hockey, football, and baseball games at various stadiums in Alberta.

Unfortunately, specific ticket price information for many major stadiums was unavailable 21.

However, we found some information on ticket prices for the following:

Stadium

Sport

Ticket Price

Commonwealth Stadium

Football

Starting at $33

McMahon Stadium

Football

Starting at $21

Seaman Stadium

Baseball

$23 to $35

These are starting prices for regular-season games. Ticket prices can fluctuate based on various factors, including seat location and the specific event. For instance, at Commonwealth Stadium, average ticket prices can range from $0 for seats in the back to $0 for premium seats 22.

Cost of Recreation Centers in Alberta

Recreation centers provide Albertans with access to various indoor and outdoor facilities, including swimming pools, fitness centers, gymnasiums, and ice rinks. These centers offer a wide range of recreational activities for individuals and families, promoting physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being.

The cost of accessing recreation centers in Alberta varies depending on the municipality, the type of facility, and the user's age. Monthly passes are a common way to access recreation centers, providing unlimited access to facilities for a set period. For example, in Calgary, a monthly Rec Pass Plus for an adult costs $66.90, while a Rec Pass costs $56.60 46. In Edmonton, a regular monthly pass for an adult costs $80, while a continuous monthly pass costs $71 47.

Daily admission rates are also available for those who prefer not to commit to a monthly pass. In Strathcona County, the daily admission rate for an adult is $10 48. Recreation centers often offer discounted rates for youth, seniors, and families.

Comparison to Other Provinces and Historical Prices

Comparing recreational activity prices in Alberta with other provinces and historical prices offers insights into affordability for Albertans. While a comprehensive comparison is limited by available data, some information suggests that skiing costs in Alberta are generally comparable to other major Canadian ski destinations, such as British Columbia 24.

Historically, anecdotal evidence suggests significant increases in skiing costs in Alberta over the past decade 29. In 1936, skis and boots cost $8.50 and $3.60, respectively, at Sun Valley, which translates to roughly $163.31 and $69.17 today 30. This highlights a substantial increase in equipment costs, even after accounting for inflation. Similarly, historical data indicates that golfing costs in Alberta have also risen 31. However, further research is needed to quantify these increases and compare them to inflation and changes in household income.

Impact on Quality of Life

The cost of recreational activities can significantly impact Albertans' quality of life. When leisure activities become unaffordable, participation may decline, leading to reduced physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being. This can have broader implications for community health and social cohesion.

Ski areas in Alberta generate $505 million for the local economy and support 22,522 jobs 33. However, despite the economic benefits, rising costs are a concern. Online discussions reveal that some individuals and families find it increasingly difficult to afford skiing and golfing trips, leading them to reduce their participation 34. This suggests a potential trade-off between economic benefits and individual affordability.

In 2022/23, skier visits in Western Canada increased by 100,000, with 1.36 million Canadians actively participating in skiing and snowboarding 35. Despite this high participation rate, concerns about affordability persist, as evidenced by online discussions where Albertans express frustration and consider alternatives like cross-country skiing or backcountry skiing due to rising costs 29.

The economic impact of sporting events in Alberta is also significant. The Edmonton Oilers' playoff run and the Calgary Stampede generate substantial revenue and contribute to job creation. The Calgary Stampede alone attracts over 1.4 million visitors and generates $540 million for Alberta, with $227 million directly benefiting Calgary's economy 36. This highlights the potential for sporting events to boost the economy and potentially offset the costs of recreational activities.

Furthermore, the average expenditure per golf course in Canada is $1.9 million, with Alberta having the second-highest operational cost per course at $2.2 million 37. This suggests that operational costs may contribute to the cost of green fees, potentially impacting affordability for golfers.

The impact of recreation center costs on Albertans is multifaceted. While these centers provide valuable recreational opportunities, affordability can be a concern, especially for low-income families. Studies have shown a correlation between household income and participation in recreation center activities, with lower-income households having lower participation rates 49. This highlights the need for initiatives and programs to make recreation centers more accessible for all Albertans.

Initiatives to Make Recreation More Affordable

Recognizing the importance of affordable recreation, various initiatives and programs aim to make leisure activities more accessible for Albertans. These include:

  • Discounted ski passes and multi-day tickets: Many ski resorts offer discounts for multi-day passes, online purchases, and other promotions 38.

  • Loyalty programs and discount cards: Some ski resorts and golf courses offer loyalty programs and discount cards that provide reduced rates for frequent visitors. For example, Marmot Basin's Escape Card offers 50% off regular lift tickets and discounts on rentals and lessons, while Mount Norquay's Big Drop Card provides similar benefits 38.

  • Junior golf programs: Initiatives like Youth on Course, a non-profit organization operating in the US, Australia, and Canada, provide affordable golfing opportunities for young people 40.

  • Government funding and grant programs: The Alberta government offers various grant programs to support sport and recreation organizations and make activities more affordable for children and families 42.

  • Golf discount apps: The GOLF PASS app offers discounts at various golf courses in Alberta and British Columbia, providing another avenue for affordable golfing 45.

  • Recreation access programs: Many municipalities offer recreation access programs that provide subsidized recreation center passes and discounted registered programs for low-income individuals and families 50.

  • Leisure access programs: Some cities, like Edmonton, have leisure access programs that offer free or reduced-cost admission to recreation facilities for eligible residents 51.

These initiatives are crucial for ensuring Albertans can access affordable recreational opportunities and enjoy the associated benefits for their quality of life.

Conclusion

The cost of recreational activities in Alberta, such as skiing, golfing, attending sporting events, and utilizing recreation centers, can be a barrier for many. While a definitive answer to the question "Are Albertans Paying More for Leisure Activities?" is challenging due to data limitations, the available evidence suggests that costs are rising. This may be impacting participation and affordability for some Albertans, as indicated by anecdotal evidence and online discussions.

Despite these challenges, Alberta's recreational activities contribute significantly to the province's economy and quality of life. Skiing and sporting events generate substantial revenue and support numerous jobs, while golfing provides both economic and social benefits. Recreation centers play a vital role in promoting community health and well-being.

Various initiatives and programs aim to make recreation more affordable, such as discounted passes, loyalty programs, junior golf programs, government funding, and recreation access programs. These efforts are crucial for ensuring that all Albertans can access and enjoy leisure activities.

Further research is needed to comprehensively assess the affordability of recreational activities in Alberta, including comparisons to other provinces and historical trends. More data is needed on the impact of recreational costs on participation rates, satisfaction levels, and overall quality of life. This information can help inform policy decisions and guide the development of programs and initiatives to ensure that all Albertans have access to affordable and enjoyable leisure opportunities.
